Dyneema cable can be twisted or braided into a number of cable and cord constructions including those commonly found in steel wire constructions and is often considered as a direct replacement for steel. Dyneema cable is made from high modulus polyethylene (HMPE) fiber, and is up to 10 times lighter weight than an equal strength steel wire cable. Dyneema fiber is available in different varieties including SK75, SK78 and DM20.
Dyneema cable has a number of benefits including ultra-high strength to weight ratio, excellent elastic properties and internal friction characteristics, high flex fatigue resistance, and good chemical resistance. Dyneema in a cable construction provides excellent handling properties and is superior to steel in many marine environments and dynamic applications.
Termination of high modulus fiber like Dyneema cable has long been a great challenge faced by many engineers as the cable will often fail at the termination because of the poor efficiency of the termination method.
